Cleveland – nine days. Three grand slams. A division title could be closing in.

It was the first postseason campaign for Royce Lewis, the former first-round pick who overcame a two-year ACL injury to unleash his talents on the league. It also turned out to be one of the most memorable debuts in the history of the game.

The reason for that is because Lewis homered for the third time in just over a week, continuing his incredible on-base play that set up the Twins’ big hit in Game 2 against the Guardians on Monday at Progressive Field. From there, the Twins continued to rack up the runs, eventually outscoring their opponents 20-6 to win the first game of this decisive American League Central series.

Instead, the Twins removed all doubt early as they extended their division lead to six games with 24 games remaining until the end of the season and just two games left in the direct matchup with their rivals. At one point in this season series, the Guardians were up 6-5 and dominated in the deciding game.

Cleveland starter Lucas Giolito walked three batters in the second inning, including one with the bases loaded, setting the stage for another magnificent performance by Lewis. The right-hander, once again trailing 2-0 on the scoreboard, threw a high-speed pitch to the inside corner, but Lewis’ uppercut swing drove the no-doubt ball a projected 401 feet over the high wall in left field.

Lewis’ Minnesota legacy continued to grow as the homer became one of the highlights of his three-hit, four-run performance, which included a bases-loaded double when he reached base again in the sixth inning, contributing to his career-high six RBIs.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Lewis hit a grand slam off Texas reliever Chris Stratton on Aug. 27, 2023, and then homered a day later against the Guardians, making him the first rookie in MLB/MLB history to hit three home runs in eight games or less, and only the fourth player to join Larry Parrish (1982), Jim Northrup (1968) and Lou Gehrig (1931).

Lewis’ three home runs this season also set a Twins single-season record, tying for the second-most home runs by a rookie player in a single season behind Alexei Ramirez’s four home runs in 2008.

At just 24 years old, Lewis now has four home runs in his first 13 career home runs, making him the second-fewest player in American League/North Atlantic League history to homer in his first 13 home runs, trailing only Chris Taylor, who has four home runs in his first 11 career home runs.

In the Minnesota-Cleveland rivalry, Lewis is going to be a key player for years to come – and forgive the ‘keepers if they’re already tired of Lewis, as three of those homers were by Cleveland pitchers. Lewis’ first home run, and the first of his career, was hit on May 13, 2022, when he faced Guardians reliever Bryan Shaw.
