As a player and coach, Steve Kerr has gone through many different eras since entering the NBA world. Born in 1965, he began his NBA career in the late 1980s and retired in 2003. However, he never really left the game and has been coaching the Warriors since 2014.

As he prepares to get his team back into title contention for the 2023-24 season, he’s starting to realize that some of his coaching references are a little ahead of his playing days.

Kerr appeared on KNBR’s “Tolbert & Copes” on Monday and shared a fascinating story about his recent reference to legendary coach Don Nelson and the widely known up-tempo offense he developed, commonly known as “Nellie Ball.”

“The pop culture I mentioned,” Kerr said, “is outdated.” Speaking of which, near the end of the [L.A.] Lakers [preseason] game, the Lakers had scored 70 points in the first half, so I went to the end of the bench, and during the course of the game I said to those of us who were sitting there, ‘Guys, we’re not touching anything we want to do better. We’re going to turn it around, we’re not defending anybody. We’re just trying to outrun them. That’s Nellie Bauer and that’s just Nellie Bauer.”

“I didn’t think much of it at the time. The next day, I got a text from Lester Quiñones and he Googled Nellie Bauer. He took a screenshot of a picture of Nellie Bauer and said, ‘I’m definitely going to have to check this “out, Coach.”‘ That comment straight up took me by surprise.” I was like, “Oh my God, of course. These guys weren’t even born when Nellie was coaching.” So I had to start updating my pop culture.”

Nelson first coached the Braves between 1988 and 1995. Quinones was born in 2000.

The “Nellie Ball” was developed because Nelson wanted to speed up the pace of the game. Some may think it’s a simple concept, but Nelson did. It also proved to work as he is one of the winningest coaches in NBA history.

Kerr’s story reminds us that the game of basketball is constantly evolving, and even the most successful coaches need to adapt their coaching style to keep up. It’s also a testament to Kerr’s close relationship with his players, who happily text him about things like “Nellie Ball.”
