Joel Embiid had a historic first quarter in the Philadelphia 76ers’ game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night. Despite being listed as questionable due to rest before the game, Embiid opened the game with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and three caps.
It’s the first time a player has put up those kinds of numbers in the first quarter since the game-by-game era began in the NBA during the 1996-97 season. It’s not clear if anyone had done it before that season, but players like Wilt Chamberlain and Magic Johnson were able to accomplish the feat with ease throughout their storied careers.
Embiid is off to a hot start this season, contributing 29.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 1.5 caps per game. He has carried a huge load for the 76ers in the absence of James Harden, who remains out while awaiting his fate.
If the reigning MVP wants to help the 76ers have a great season, he’ll have to do more. This season, the NBA changed the rules for individual awards, including MVPs, and players must now play at least 65 games to be eligible.
Embiid committed to winning in Philly
The uncertainty surrounding James Harden this season has raised questions about Joel Embiid’s loyalty to the Philadelphia 76ers. Some have speculated that Embiid will demand a trade if the 76ers suffer another losing season, as the New York Knicks are close to him.
However, Ian Begley of the New York Times recently reported that Embiid is committed to winning in Philadelphia and has no intention of asking for a trade. The belief within the organization is that the reigning MVP doesn’t want to leave anytime soon.
Rumor has it that the Knicks are ready to throw a big package at the 76ers once Embiid hits the court. That package could include Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson, Evan Fournier and multiple first-round picks. Embiid is under contract with the Phillies through the end of the 2025-26 season and has a player option for next season.
